The Gia Lam train factory is the site of The Ha Noi Festival of Creative Design 2023, which features a wide range of artwork from artists presenting ancient beliefs through a modern lens.
Having gone through heavy bombardments and harsh adversities, the Gia Lam Train Factory has witnessed nearly 120 years of our stormy history. Along with serving as a reminder of the Industrial Revolution, the location also symbolizes Vietnam's early 20th-century railway system's development.
Therefore, it is a great opportunity for this festival to take place at the Gia Lam Train Factory, a location that is rich in historical events. The Ha Noi Festival of Creative Design 2023 - “Exploring the Flow” consists of two main exhibitions by famous artists with extraordinary masterpieces representing the modern prism.
“Thuy Phu” - Trinh Minh Tien
The first Train Factory 5B - where the exhibition "Thuy Phu" by artist TMT takes place - brings the message of heritage traces through memories of time expressed through works on old car tires. Among them, a series of heritage paintings on car hoods were highly appreciated and even received prestigious awards such as the painting of the Hanoi Cathedral on the car hood.
The artist's choice to display his artworks at this train factory further enhances the intersection of these elements. The modern capo covers, now decorated with ancient heritage paintings that reflect the historical marks of the nation, evoke emotions and contemplation in viewers.
“The Call to Genesis” - Thu Tran
The exhibition draws inspiration from the image of a nursing Mother Earth, sending people to a realm of primordial chaos, where the sorrowful cry of Mother Goddess resounds to eternity. These Goddesses always save people's lives in their darkest hours, and help us go through the calamities since our emergence from her cave. Mother Nature is now weeping for her son, the Earth, for being damaged by forest fire, war, and climate crisis.
Following the call from nature, the artist’s responses manifested in this body of artworks. Inspired by the Muong indigenous culture, such as the “Giving Birth to the Earth and Water” epic, she uses local materials to highlight the cultural flow that defines her narration. When asked about the time spent on the artwork and the special in choosing materials, according to Thu Tran, there are many special things, such as this silk painted in four years and accumulating gradually day by day. Apart from silk materials, namely silk threads and organza silk, she also used banana paper made by people in Luong Son and Giang paper from the Giang village in Pa Co.
The image of Mother Origin is a constant pursuit, which has guided Thu Tran in the expedition to trace the root of her ancestry. From the perspective of an offspring nurtured by nature, carrying a sense of torment, Thu Tran praises eternal femininity with great gratitude and respect.
The two art exhibition spaces at The Ha Noi Festival of Creative Design 2023 combine tradition and modernity, which has brought viewers interesting experiences. This helps them reconsider the antiquity of the nation's cultural heritage through a new perspective. It is a positive artistic trend, contributing to preserving and promoting the traditional values of the nation.
